What
appears at first sight to be a fine tapestry is actually an elaborate
marquetry picture drawn by hand, then crafted from a variety of
woods of different colors. In this scene, every detail--every
stripe, blade of grass, shadow, highlight, even the tigers’
pupils--is in fact carved from separate pieces of wood precisely
cut and perfectly fitted. Marquetry is a specialized art form
in Karnataka.
