              Pot-bellied
dwarfs appear to hold up the elaborately carved architraves of
the western torana gate to the Great Stupa at
Sanchi. Each of the four toranas faces a cardinal
point and depicts scenes from the Jataka Tales
based on the Buddha’s life, as well as natural and mythological
creatures. These first century Buddhist carvings were artistic
donations of time and talent by various individuals. Each artist’s
interpretation and individual style of expressing well-known scenes
makes Sanchi an interesting synthesis of non-commercial talent.
