Meherangarh Fort Window

A Rajput guard looks out from a balcony of one of the palace apartments inside the enormous Meherangarh Fort. The red sandstone windows and balconies are framed by elaborate lattice screens known as jalee, which have the practical function of providing ventilation and light while maintaining privacy. Meherangarh Fort and its palaces house a veritable museum of cannons, Rajput armory, palanquins, elephant howdahs, miniature paintings, musical instruments and period costumes. The majestic fort crowns a 125-meter-high hill overlooking the city of Jodhpur with its numerous blue houses owned by Brahmans, and the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace, now converted into a five-star hotel.
