Jalee Lattice Screens

Lattice screens known as jalee are an architectural feature in Islamic architecture, often used in rooms and buildings where women are in purdah: Jalee allow ventilation, let in light and provide anonymity to the persons inside. Sheikh Salim Chishti prophesied that a male child would be born to Emperor Akbar’s then barren wife. When this prophecy came true, Akbar built his capital, the now abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri, on site. Barren women visit the tomb of Sheikh Salim in hope of conceiving.
