Ganges River

Pilgrims descend the steps of the Dasaswamedh Ghat to bathe in the Ganges River. Devout Hindus believe that bathing in the sacred Ganges purifies the body and soul, and that to die in Varanasi guarantees moksha, release from the endless cycle of rebirth. A city dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, Varanasi also has a place for many other deities, including Sitala, the goddess of smallpox, whose shrine can be seen next to the Dasaswamedh Ghat.
