A
dignified nomadic Rabari looks unflinchingly into the camera as
his wife turns her head demurely to the side. She wears a black
lambswool shawl called a lobadi, or ludi,
as a veil to hide from men and strangers. The Rabari are a pastoral
people spread over the western plains of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Rabari women are especially strict in maintaining purdah,
discreet isolation.
