The
vadlo, a heavy silver necklaceworn by Harijan
women, constitutes the most important item in their dowry. In
this community, a girl's dowry is usually a compilation of 21
items--a number considered to be auspicious--consisting of jewelry,
clothing and household goods collected throughout the girl's childhood.
