A
devout Shia Muslim adds a garland to a gold-plated alam,
an insignia of the faith, placed inside the Bade-Shah-e-Ashoor
Khana. The Ashoor Khanas of Hyderabad house the
Shia alams throughout the year. However, the
alams are only on display during the 10-day observance of Muharram,
when the doors of the Ashoor Khanas open to the
public. On the last day of Muharram the alams
are paraded in a procession through the streets.
