A
classical Yogya style Javanese dancer portraying
the evil King Rawana struts about on stage, stomping his
legs and jerking his head from side to side in an intimidating
manner. The principal characters in the Ramayana,
a timeless Indian epic introduced to Indonesia over 1,000
years ago, embody various human traits--such as loyalty,
greed, virtue, lust, respect and deceit--and reveal complex
human emotions and struggles between good and evil.
