At age 17 Elijah Cabiles is already an award winning artist. Elijah and his fellow classmates at Baldwin High visited the Schaefer International Gallery, Maui Arts & Cultural Center in January 1999, on a school field trip organized as part of the 'Educational and Creative Arts' interactive programs associated with the Cultural Portraits of Indonesia exhibition. Elijah chose to make a Crayon & Marker drawing of a Javanese dancer portraying King Rawana of the Ramayana Epic. Elijah's dramatic strokes; his use of a black marker to make bold lines and the exqiuisite color shading all work together to effectively portray the energy and emotion of this dancer
