Bighorn sheep pose majestically atop a mountain overlooking Hemenway Park in Boulder City
Nevada is home to an estimated 5,000 bighorn sheep whose natural habitat is disappearing as new development and more highways diminish their ability to mix and breed. The Desert Bighorn (or Nelson) sheep is Nevada's state animal.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife’s sheep rescue program, presently focused on increasing herds in the Virgin Mountains, is supported by the Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn, a Las Vegas-based club that covered the $22,500 cost of this roundup and provided most of the volunteers.
