Exhibition Background... Cultural Portraits of India is Lindsay Hebberd's personal tribute to a people whose spirit, friendly nature, and generous hospitality are as unforgettable as their cultural achievements. The Indians' irrepressible enthusiasm for life is expressed in a myriad of forms, a profusion of details, and a vibrancy of spirit that knows few parallels. Unfortunately, knowledge of India is often restricted to news coverage of problems and poverty and celluloid images of stereotypes that depict India as a land of oriental exoticism. Hebberd's photographs illustrate the less well-known side of India: the natural beauty and cultural heritage that permeates the lives of the people but does not make the headlines. India is more than a country. It is a subcontinent. Within it exist myriad languages, peoples, religions, and geography. A young nation, India is an ancient land. Cultural Portraits of India celebrates the beauty and heritage of India in a spirit of respect, appreciation, and affection for a diverse people and their traditions, talents, and beliefs. The Cultural Portraits of India exhibition contains seventy large museum-quality photographic prints, including nine 1.5-meter-long panoramas. Experiencing this exhibition is like touring the Subcontinent without leaving the premises--it is an inspirational, educational, and transportive experience! Exhibition
